I saw her again outside last night.
She waits till after dark when all the little kids are fed and sleeping.
She stands by herself on the back porch of the big yellow house.
It’s a temporary home for her and other young women like her
who had to take the babies and leave and find some place safe.
I sometimes see her out there during the day.
“Hey! How’re you doing?” we say.
“Have a good day!” That sort of thing.
She has such a sweet voice.
She doesn’t see me when it’s dark out of course.
She comes out wearing her hair wrapped up in fabric on top of her head.
She looks lovely and sings a song to herself.
“Find someone like you,” she sings, over and over.
I really hope she does. I really, really do.
